Fantasy on Celtic Tunes: Linda Larkin

Price: $5.00
SKU: 62054

Subtitled “Memorable Gaelic Melodies in a Mystical Setting”, this  arrangement includes well-known favorites Searching for Lambs, Over the Sea to Skye, Islay Jig and Eleanor Plunkett and evokes the sound of antiquity.  It includes some lovely original music based on the harmonies of Eleanor Plunket.  Delicate segues keep it flowing and artfully tie it all together.  This could easily be adapted to harp and flute duo.  A minor moves into G major with plenty of time for adding F sharps. Appropriate for recitals or special music at church services.  Early Intermediate or Advanced Beginner.

Waltzing to Sayulita – harp ensemble by Linda Larkin

Price: $8.00
SKU: 90847

Linda has captured the Latin flavor of this Mexican beach town in her original tune by using Latin rhythms. Written for 1, 2, 3, or 4 harps, but Harp 1 can also be a solo.  The triplets, PDLT and Latin rhythms all come together for a great sound.  The solo harp version is simple, and with the added parts, the ensemble begins to sound very full, even though the parts are easy.  Written in the key of  A minor with a few lever changes (G#’s).  Spiral bound score with four pullout parts.

  • Harp 4 is very easy and can be played with one hand on a lap harp.
  • Harp 3 requires a full range lever harp (or pedal harp), and contains rhythm only with some chords.  Advanced beginner to lower intermediate level.
  • Harp 2 requires a full range lever harp (or pedal harp), and contains both rhythm and melody.   Intermediate level.
  • Harp 1 is very similar to harp 2 but has more melody and chordings.  Can be played as a solo.  Intermediate level.

Based on the work of John Philip Newell’s latest book, Praying with the Earth: A Prayerbook for Peace, this beautiful collection of meditative chants was composed by Santa Fe musician Linda Larkin. It contains 3 chants with texts from the Psalms which have descants in Hebrew, 3 chants from Matthew with Aramaic descants and 3 chants from the Koran with Arabic descants. Thus Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions are included.
The chants are recorded on the CD “Chanting for Peace” and correlate with “Praying with the Earth: A Prayerbook for Peace” by author John Philip Newell. Examples of texts used are “Come to me, you who are weary, carrying heaven burdens and I will give you rest” from Matthew and “For every soul there is a Guardian watching it” from the Koran. Musical notation includes chant melodies, descants and accompaniments written for folk harp or piano, with chord charts for guitar and other instruments.

Chants in the Sephardic Tradition, by Linda Larkin (e-book)

Price: $7.95
SKU: E126

For devotional chanting, inspired by John Philip Newell’s “Sound of the Eternal: A Celtic Psalter” From Wikipedia:  A psalter is a volume containing the Book of Psalms often with other devotional material bound in as well, such as a liturgical calendar and litany of the Saints.

The benefits of the practice of chanting, the repetitious singing of sacred texts, can include a calm mind, a relaxed body and a joyful spirit!  If our heart is in it, chanting creates communion with the mystery of the Divine.  The repetition in changing practice reflects the repetition in breathing, in the sunrise and in the seasons.  It is hoped the simplicity of the chants makes them easy to memorize, so they may be recalled in challenging moments, to be sung out loud or silently within the heart.

2 chants for each day of the week, morning and evening.

  • Psalms 62:5, 85:8, 27:1, 26:8, 96:6
  • Wisdom 11:24, 16:13-14
  • Isaiah 48:6, 51:3, 58:11. 6:3, 44: 6 & 8, 54:10, 52:1

The contents of the book, which are 14 short chants for voice with harp (or keyboard) accompaniment.

Ensemble Etudes – Memories and Dreams, by Linda Larkin

 (e-book)

Price: $11.00
SKU: 90846E

For players wishing to increase their proficiency in ensemble performing, a series of short skill-building etudes to be sight-read by harp ensembles.  Most parts are for only one hand, for the ease (and relief) of the player in attaining completion and satisfaction quickly.  The titles are:  Early Memory [skills: rhythm and listening, key of F], Recurring Dream [skill: finger damping, key of C], Moonlight Remembered [skill: arpeggios, key of D], Fantasy [skills: etouffe, harmonics, PDLT and improvisation, key of Eb], Lightness [skills: rhythm and dynamics, key of C].  This is a unique collection, as the pieces are not necessarily easy. They are for harpists who have played at least a year.  Not all parts are the same level of difficulty.   The composition “Fantasy” is very unusual as it provides 8 bars which are blank – an opportunity to improvise!
